How to Help Clients Test a New Field Without Overcommitting

When a client wants a new field and has little proof yet, a volunteer role is often the fastest way to test fit and put relevant language on the resume.

VolunteerMatch is still a practical place to search by mission, role type, or location, including virtual options.

Use it as a coaching assignment, not a homework dump. In session, pick the target field, then filter for roles that would produce keywords and a title you can stand behind. A short, current volunteer entry beats another year of "interested in transitioning."

Look for work that produces a story: a project owned, a population served, a tool used, a result. Then write it like a job: organization, scope, and impact, not like a hobby.

If the client cannot take on unpaid work, a short course plus one informational conversation can serve the same purpose: recent, relevant, and specific.
